This past weekend, Tiffany and I wanted to make a holiday treat. Because we decided to enlist the help of my little nieces, we settled on a project that would be fun for children. We found a recipe for modified rice crispy treats that ultimately look like little clumps of coal. These would make for such a cute gift this holiday season!
For this recipe, all you need are these ingredients…
Clumps of Coal Rice Krispy Treats
3 Tbsp. butter
6 cups marshmallows
1 tsp. vanilla
5 cups Cocoa Krispies®
1 1/2 cups crushed Oreos®
Black food coloring (I ended up ordering this from Amazon but read that some Michael’s and Walmart stores carry black food coloring )
1.) Pour the Rice Krispies® into a large mixing bowl and add the crushed Oreos®.
2.) Melt the butter over low heat on the stove in a saucepan. Once melted, turn heat down as low as possible and add the marshmallows. Mix continuously. Add in the vanilla and the black food coloring. We used approximately 12 drops but feel free to add more or less depending on just how dark you want the “clumps of coal” to look. (*Note: The food coloring will turn tongues black…which proved hilarious for my nieces and required a peek in the mirror, of course!)
3.) Once the marshmallow mixture has completely melted, pour it over the Rice Krispies® and Oreos®. Stir everything together until the cereal and cookies are evenly coated in the marshmallow mixture.
4.) Place spoonfuls of the new mixture onto a greased cookie sheet and mold slightly to look like clumps of coal. Let them cool for approximately 30 minutes before sampling.
The finished product…
We ended up placing the adorable little pieces of coal in a mason jar, added a tag that we stamped and placed a bright red bow on top. We think that it makes for such a cute holiday gift! They would also look great in a box like this one with “Coal”, “Clumps of Coal” or “You’ve Made the Naughty List” stamped or written on the side.
Hope you are all having a wonderful start to December! Stay tuned for more fun holiday treats and projects in the coming weeks!
xoxo
